Department Barbara
Kalkis Campbell,
CA -- August 14, 2001 -- Summit
Microelectronics Inc. has announced immediate
availability of the SMH4044
Advanced Compact PCI Hot Swap Controller with IPMI
System Management Bus
Support.
The device is the industry's first hot swap
controller to allow individual cards to be
powered-up and down under software control through
the IPMI. Critical operating parameters of each
card can be queried to insure that the card is
operating correctly and that the system supplies
and locally generated supplies are within
tolerance. The
SMH4044 has been developed to support the needs of
high-availability systems. It monitors multiple
voltages and currents during insertion and removal
of the card to ensure that other cards in the
system are not affected. It also monitors these
voltages and currents during normal system
operation to allow the system to be brought down in
a controlled manner. Design
time is significantly reduced through the ability
to select and change operating parameters while the
system is in operation to optimize such settings as
voltage sensor value, over-current sensor values
and filter times. This is accomplished through
programmable analog technology, which allows analog
configuration values to be accessed through the
SMBus interface. "The
SMH4044 represents a significant advance in the
area of Compact PCI hot Swap, since, for the first
time, power management can be controlled from the
operating system, providing a holistic
implementation to power management rather than the
ad hoc implementations that have been done in the
past", stated Rick
Orlando, Chief Technology
Officer
of Summit Microelectronics. "As the Compact PCI
specification continues to evolve it is providing
essential architectural elements for the deployment
of systems with high availability to address the
need to the embedded communications systems, and
Summit Microelectronics will continue to supply
integrated solutions to meet these
requirements." The
SMH4044 is available now as a 48-pin TQFP for $9.30
each in quantities of 100 pieces. Summit offers a
full tool suite including a software graphical user
interface (GUI) and in-system programming tools.
The software can be downloaded from Summit's
website (www.summitmicro.com). Summit
Microelectronics develops semiconductors that
manage the power functions in communications system
equipment. Using Summit's analog technology,
customers can achieve carrier-class availability,
the highest standard of reliability available today
for telecommunications, data communications and
Internet applications. Founded
in 1997, Summit is headquartered in Campbell,
California. The Company is ISO 9001 and ISO 14001
certified, and is in the process of gaining STACK
certification. Summit's website is www.summitmicro.com. Summit
