Summit Data Acquisition System Puts "Black Box" Fault Recording and Prediction on Telecom Line Cards

Campbell, CA -- January 16, 2001 -- Summit Microelectronics has announced the addition of the SMD1108 autonomous environmental monitor to its line of power management devices for telecommunications line card applications. The SMD1108 is believed to be the first such device to provide both fault prediction and fault recording on a single chip.

The SMD1108 is a programmable 8-channel, 10-bit data acquisition system that autonomously monitors and measures voltages, currents, temperature and airflow on as many as four supplies without the need for a microcontroller. Because of its full recording capability, the device allows the root failure cause of power components to be determined and the potential for further failures to be exposed before they occur. With this key capability in place, communications equipment manufacturers can look to elevate reliable system performance and uptime from the "five nines" of reliability, or 99.999%, to six nines, or 99.9999% of system uptime.

The SMD1108 features 4 programmable voltage sensors, 4 over-current sensors, a 4-channel auto-monitor for programmable limits (over-, under- and window-), and 4 programmable sample intervals for autonomous selection, conversion and limit comparisons. A two-wire I2C serial data interface is included on the chip to allow communications with the host microprocessor.

The SMD1108 is available now as a 48-pin TQFP for $12.85 each in quantities of 1000 pieces. Summit offers a full tool suite including a software graphical user interface (GUI) and in-system programming tools. The software can be downloaded from Summit's website (www.summitmicro.com).
